About Us

WHO ARE WE?

Alpine Division Scale Models, L.L.C. is located in Cerritos, California, with an Artesia, California mailing address. Ed Suydam originally started this model company in 1950 and sold products under the name of E. Suydam & Co, out of Duarte, California.

Alpine Division Scale Models is named after the Alpine Division of the Pacific Electric Railway in Southern California, which ran between the top of Echo Mountain, above Pasadena, CA, and the famed Alpine Tavern. Built by Professor Thaddeus S.C. Lowe and engineered by David J. Macpherson, the breath-taking Mt. Lowe Railway was a Southern California tourist attraction in the years from July 4, 1893 to 1938. Alpine Division operated what was considered in its day a magnificent attraction and an engineering marvel.

A Different Kind of Model:

Built with the same spirit of originality, innovation and excellence as those first produced by Ed Suydam, our building kits are a bit different then most of the other products on the market today. The kits are hand made in the United States using the finest materials and precision techniques, replicating true scale models that stand out from the rest.

Our product line is made from durable top quality laser-cut matboard and basswood; the same matboard that is used in the framing of your pictures and pieces of art. The ease of construction and overall fun that these kits provide make them an ideal project for new and old modelers alike. Wood glue is used in the assembly, and plastic doors and windows are provided with most kits. Using quality model paints will produce very fine looking models. Most of the kits have roof detail, some have signs and lighting, and some have interior detail.

Our sincere hope and desire is that our kits will help to enable you to enjoy the model railroad hobby to its fullest extent.
