NEWS RELEASE January 6, 2006 Old Holiday Greeting Cards and Used Eyeglasses Are Collected by LADWP to Help the Needy The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) continues to collect old eyeglasses, hearing aids and greeting cards for donation to nonprofit organizations including the Lion’s Club Eye Foundation, the Los Angeles Children’s Museum and St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. The LADWP normally has permanent collection bins year-round at all of its customer service offices, but it is after the holidays when the majority of greeting cards either get discarded or donated. Greeting cards collected by LADWP are donated to the Los Angeles Children’s Museum and St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. The Museum uses the cards for on-site art projects, while the St. Jude’s children, who are the victims of abuse or neglect, use the donated cards to make new cards, which are sold to raise program funds. All eyeglasses collected will be given to the Lion’s Club Eye Foundation. The glasses are scanned to determine their prescription and then donated to health facilities serving the needy worldwide, with an emphasis on Mexico.
Look for the small eyeglass and greeting card donation bins in the lobbies of the customer service offices listed below.
All offices are open for donations from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.
